The three things that
draw the most motorcyclists to the southern Appalachian Mountains
are The Blue Ridge Parkway, Great
Smoky Mountains National Park, and Deals
Gap. The Parkway reaches it's southern end at Cherokee,
near the southern entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park,
and Deals Gap, home to the infamous "Tail
Of The Dragon" is less than an hour west. This
map is unique from all the others as it is designed as a
guide to not only these best known attractions, but includes
other local attractions and describes miles and miles of additional
great roads that are too often missed or overlooked by visitors.
Whereas
other my maps tend to guide you to the out of the way and undiscovered
jewels which lie within the great peaks, this
map lays out specific loop rides and preferred approach routes
to the area. It describes three approaches to Deals Gap from the
east, a direct approach via the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway,
the classic approach via Cherokee, and for those seeking to sample
the best of back roads riding, a "Motorcyclists
Route" which turns an hours ride into a many hour adventure
ride through the mountains on some of my favorite back roads. Once
you've reached Deals Gap, four loop rides are described which include
the most popular loop on the beautiful 51 mile Cherohala
Skyway, the Tennessee version of the Blue Ridge Parkway,
a loop through Smoky Mountains National Park, and two more loops
which explore some of the best motorcycle rides in the area. The
descriptions alert you to those unexpected or poorly marked turns,
guide you to the scenic points of interest along the way, and inform
you of how far it is between turns and how long it will take you
to complete the route. More than 850 miles
of roads are detailed!
Be
sure to make a ride over to Maggie Valley to see the "Wheels
Through Time" motorcycle museum, and while you're
in Cherokee, home of the Eastern
Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina, experience native
American culture at the Museum
of the Cherokee Indian, learn their history through one
of the longest running live outdoor dramas - "Unto
These Hills".
Of all the roads in the
Appalachian Mountains, the most notable (after the Blue Ride Parkway)
is the section of US 129 which crosses the North Carolina / Tennessee
border popularized as "The
Tail Of The Dragon" at Deals Gap. Infamous for
its challenging collection of 318 curves within its 11 mile stretch
through the Gap at the southwest corner of Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, both motorcyclists and car enthusiasts make the pilgrimage
to enjoy the challenge. Also included is another great road leading
into Deals Gap from the east - "The
Hellbender 28"
Scope:
This map describes
the very westernmost portion of North Carolina and the border lands
of Tennessee, includes the entire expanse of Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, and just clips small portions of Georgia and South
Carolina.
